Why It Gets Loudest at Night
Daytime has built-in distraction: tasks, people, motion, a constant stream of small demands that give the brain something outside itself to respond to. At night, that stimulation disappears, and for an ADHD brain, quiet doesn't register as calm. It registers as a gap the brain fills with its own noise instead.
That's lying down and suddenly remembering five unrelated things, none of them urgent, all of them insistent. A day that felt fine turning into a night that won't settle, for no reason you can point to. Feeling most "on" right when the day is supposed to be ending, like the brain waited all day for its turn and finally got it. Racing Thoughts Aren't the Same as Mind-Wandering

Some of it is a faster, more urgent stacking of thoughts that feels closer to racing, one idea crowding in before the last one has finished, each one carrying its own small charge of pressure. Naming which one is happening makes it easier to know what actually helps, since a wandering mind and a racing one don't respond to the same tools. A drifting mind might just need an anchor, something to loosely hold attention. A racing one usually needs the pressure released first, through movement, writing, or talking it out, before anything resembling calm becomes possible.
The Body Gets Loud Too
Mental overload rarely stays purely mental. Restlessness, fidgeting, and a pull toward movement are often the body's version of the same overactive system, not a separate problem. That arousal-regulation research from earlier actually predicts this directly: hyperactivity and sensation-seeking have been described as the body's own attempt to stabilize an unsteady internal state, a way of generating the stimulation the brain isn't reliably generating on its own. It's the same restless energy that shows up as movement when the mind can't settle on its own, whether that's a knee bouncing through a long meeting or a sudden need to reorganize a drawer at eleven at night.
Sometimes the brain being loud looks like a leg bouncing under the desk. Sometimes it's pacing the kitchen while on a phone call that doesn't require standing at all.

Rest for an ADHD brain isn't the absence of stimulation. It's the right amount and kind of stimulation, structured instead of stopped.
